Nataliya Scheib

My art is the result of more than 20 years of classical training and experience in Europe and the U.S. The skills I developed encompass my perception of color, my sense of space and atmosphere, attention to detail, and patience.  As a native Ukrainian living in Houston, Texas, I find references in both of these contrasting cultures.

My work defies simple categorization, riding an edge between abstraction and realism. The medium I choose for any given work is determined by the concept and the idea I wish to convey.

My favored subjects are majestic natural landscapes, traditional folk art from Eastern Europe, as well as my view on situations that attract my attention.  Often psychological leitmotifs drive my subject matter, including the drive for material accumulation and the cultural influence of advertising.

I also rely on travel for inspiration. Upon return from a trip, I head straight to my studio while the impressions are still fresh. My creative process is similar to organic growth that emerges over time; it may take weeks or months to develop and complete each piece.

I find rich content in the objects acquired through any given life, such as clothing, décor, cars, and accumulated possessions. While I work with an eye for unity in each composition, I reflect on atmosphere, history, and contemporary social events, even when collecting paper and materials for my next collage or oil painting.

My gratification comes when viewers draw their own conclusions, determining for themselves the ultimate meaning of a work. In this way, I, as the artist, engage in intimate conversations with viewers.  I invite the observer to consider their lifestyle relative to their dreams and desires, and seek to offer an opportunity to slow down and consider the affects of TV, advertising, store displays, billboards, and social media, and whether they serve the viewer’s wellbeing. I hope to challenge the viewer to disregard those messages and simply observe the profound beauty of nature.
